Bob, there is a shutter in the X-E1.
The shutter is normally open, so to take a photo the shutter closes, 
opens for the correct exposure time and closes again, then finally opens 
back up to enable live view mode again.
This is typical behavior for a live view camera.
If you are using an M 240 in live view, this is exactly what will 
happen; in rangefinder mode then the shutter will be like M's of old.
