Paul,

The Cinque Terre is beautiful but overrun with tourists all the time.
Outside August-September Diana Marina, Bordighera and Imperia are
lovely coastal places that are almost deserted.

Most of the small towns in Liguria are lovely and deserted.  Look at
the train lines and pick some place you've never heard of.
