Some folks walk the beach in the winter to find vary large, almost one pound clams. They look for small holes in the wet sand about the width of their finger, and then dig out the clam from under that hole. http://www.hemenway.com/NantasketBeach.jpg Since it's owned by the State of Massachusetts, there's no fence as in the nearby town of Cohasset, which I showed here yesterday; http://www.hemenway.com/Cohasset-Closed-til-summer.jpg My father went to a racetrack with some of his co-workers in 1945... the only time at a track in his entire life. He won the Daily Double for over $2,000.00, a lot of money back then. He arrived home tipsy and tossed $100.00 bills all over the floor of the vestibule, shouting "Look Frances, look Frances" My mother gathered it all up and put him to bed. The next morning she got us kids into the car and dragged him out of the bed with his triumphant hangover. We went to Cohasset, Nantasket, Hingham, and last Weymouth where they bought a small two story summer cottage, mounted on posts for $1,000.00... At any rate, our little neighborhood had a rocky beach which was almost useless at low tide, so often my folks would bring us to nearby Nantasket, which being right on the ocean, had plenty of water when the tide was out. Here's our rocky Wessagusset Beach; http://www.hemenway.com/WessagussetBeach.jpg http://www.hemenway.com/WessagussetBeach-2.jpg The Fore River Shipyard where the USS Massachusetts BB-59, and aircraft carriers USS Wasp CV-7 and the USS Bunker HILL CV-17 were built and launched during WWII, is off to the left, so they all would have passed by this beach on their first voyage. My folks kept the cottage until they sold it in 1977 after we had all gone... my brother to San Francisco, my sister to nearby Marblehead, MA and myself to Jonesboro, TN. We had wonderful times there every summer, learning to swim and to sail and to go camping on the various small islands in Boston harbor. Several times a year I drive to the South Shore to visit my old haunts and take photos, these were shot this past October with my Leica R8, Elmarit 19mm and Provia. Hope that you enjoyed my little story. Jim
