In the strictest sense of the term
"Art" can be said to refer to objects made for their own sake.
In that sense:
"lamps" do not qualify as sculpture;
"teapots do not qualify as sculpture;
etc.

Yet we've all seen lamps and teapots that have become more sculptural than 
functional.

What if I intend to simply make:
the most beautiful photograph possible.
the most beautiful table possible.
the most beautiful painting possible.
the most beautiful story possible.
the most beautiful sounds possible with my guitar.
the most beautiful sounds possible with my flute.
the most beautiful railing.
the most beautiful bronze door.
the most beautiful cave painting.
the most beautiful building.

Bottom line - when the the beauty of a thing trumps its basic function
it becomes Art - in my book.
