There is decent (if not abundant) tonal gradation in these photos
where it counts, but these fish don't have a lot of tonal gradation in
the brightly coloured parts and the colours are sufficiently bright
that sensors (and film, as an aside) saturate very quickly even with
optimum exposure.  Photographing them in bright sunlight is almost
impossible.
