We've stayed in some interesting places by following The Lonely Planet or
Rough Guide recommendations.  Usually it's a one or two star place with the
bathroom down the hall. This was our room in Rapallo:

I'll walk down the hall to the bathroom any day for a view like that!  And
it was 1/3 the cost of nearby hotels.
