FreeNAS is based on FreeBSD, not OpenBSD (small nit to pick, but FreeBSD's ethernet drivers might be more functional in your case...). I'm using FreeNAS 8.2.0p1 on an Artigo 2000 (32-bit cpu) and an old HP 1U server. I'm running a slightly earlier version of FreeNAS on a VIA M-Serve S2100 (basically a 64-bit version of the Artigo 2000) that'll be updated shortly. The only thing I don't like about the little Via boxes is that you have to remove screws to swap out drives. I've used both gmirror and ZFS based mirror successfully. These days I set it up with a ZFS mirror and use it for Time Machine backups and various storage tasks. You have to do a bit of special tuning for ZFS on the 32-bit boxes but it runs reliably in my hands. The 64-bit box was up for over a year before I power cycled it recently doing regular time machine backups whenever my laptop showed up on my home network. Rock solid. I'll be off the net for a few days (2012 National Sheepdog Finals) but drop me a note if you get hung up on anything. g.
