Indeed, with a suitable lens the D800E does not lack for detail - however I 
almost always pick up the M instead ;-)

I think it's premature to assume that changing to a CMOS sensor will
necessarily result in a loss of fine detail.  The CMOS sensors most of us
are familiar with are bundled with AA filters and a CFA that is optimized
more for low noise at high ISO than for low-ISO color quality.  If the next
generation digial M camera(s) uses a CMOS sensor I'd wait for comparisons
involving production samples instead of assuming.
