Most of the electronic flashes have a low voltage trigger circuit for
interface to the camera.  They use a trigger device inside that triggers the
high voltage from this lower voltage.  This has been true since about the
70's, when electrics and then electronics were put in cameras.

What you do not want to do is to use an old big bulb 40's type flash with
your fancy smancy 2012 model camera.  That will fry the guts of the camera.
Almost for sure.

Studio flashes are something that I have no experience with...

Don't think triggers pass enough voltage to fry the camera, nor do the Leica
