When I was in the Navy we used to have divorce pools. I have never lost
money on betting on a divorce. Had a fiancee myself who attempted to
pull "the officer and the gentleman" on me by lying about being
pregnant. We were engaged and I found out that there never was a
pregnancy then broke everything off at our wedding rehearsal. Thank God
I pulled the ejection handle then.

Since then, I've been witness to many marriages and all but one has
failed, both between civilian couples and military ones. I've seen some
amazing horrible divorces happen. One dragged over 6 years.
In another case, one of the guys who worked for me on the boat met a woman
at a
meat market bar near 32nd St, San Diego. The morning he brought in his
marriage license for the administrative processing in our division I
personally bet him he'd get divorced then we took a pool.
9 months later (my month in the pool!) he stormed in to the division
office and said he found her cheating on him with another sailor. Since
my coworker was co-habitating with her in the state of California, she
admitted to the judge that she cheated on my coworker but she still got
to take half of his pay for a year and a certain percentage of health
benefits as well as GI Bill.

I've got plenty of those stories and I can tell you that the closest
thing to marriage I'm doing in this life is a business license with a
partner.
