Thanks to all who offered advice. I think
That if the camera is running I can
Fix the numbering at home. 
The scary part is that when this happened
Nothing would work. Complete lockup
But the camera is taking images again so it is
Inconvenient not disastrous
BYW I have my M6  as backup.
