Aren't the little Nikon 1 series good for that sort of size/speed? Ah maybe
too small, 640/240 @ 400fps and 320/120 #@ 1200fps

This sounds like possibly a job for high speed video camera and grabbing
frames off it. Any other solution?

As high image quality as possible, but even VGA is OK, better is better.
