Do they look any different when opened outside of LR?

I exported the same picture from LR4, without any additional
processing, that I had previously exported from LR3. They were
exported as .jpg and all export parameters but "Quality" were exactly
the same. The LR3 export, with Quality set around 75 produced a 3.2
MB jpeg. LR4, with Quality set to 100, produced a jpet of only 303 KB.
