I have just changed it to semi-spot and pointed it to a green bush in overcast light - 2 stops under. Just gave it a wider view and 2 stops over....... Perhaps you have it set to "matrix" metering where the camera makes, hopefully, educated guesses as to what is going on, seemingly, in this case, without complete success.
