If it was a public grazing field for farm animals it was a "commons." The name Union comes from the fact that it was the junction of early New York's two main roads, Broadway and 4th Avenue, which is now Park Avenue. Broadway starts at the Battery, angles across Manhattan, and parallels the Hudson River all the way up to Albany. Larry Z
