Now at the top, we look across the grass plains to the Cradle Mountain, a
dolomite peak, a rock formation that is unique to this part of Tasmania.
It is an intrusion, having pushed up into weaknesses in the earth's crust.
The original "top soil" would have covered this rock by 400 feet or more,
and has slowly eroded. These mountains are some of the oldest in the
world.
