Tina (and others),

I had been using gmail as an IMAP account rather than a POP account. I 
changed the settings in Mac mail to have it work as a POP account, and the 
mail server (1) barfed up about a thousand old emails, and (2) delivered my 
test email.

Tina, try changing your account settings to POP rather than IMAP.
