Tina, thanks for suggesting that, but it shouldn't be.  I'm aware of
that issue but in my case the catalog being imported has always been
on the laptop and I can't think of how any of the images it contains
could have made their way to the desktop.

Another possibility I haven't run down yet is that if the catalog
being imported contains any 'missing files' - you know, the ones with
the question marks where the link has somehow broken - that could
cause this problem, but I haven't had time to check it yet.
