Many thanks to Vick and Doug.  I had seen the little square socket in the 
tripod mounting hole but I don't think I would ever have thought to turn it 
clockwise to remove.  After fabricating a 'suitable tool' I got the bottom 
plate off and after a while  the rewind mechanism released, although I'm not 
sure exactly why.  But it now works repeatedly and is back together.
