This type of experience casts a long shadow. All four of my wife's
grandparents were murdered ca 1941 by the Nazis and/or their Latvian and
Lithuanian cohorts. It hit me hardest as my wife and I approached the age at
which they were shot next to a trench, and we visited some of the sites at
which the murders occurred.

I repeatedly imagine myself in the same situation, at the same age. It is
not fun.

My issues do not transfer to German people of the current generation - but I
do have emotional issues related to the automotive icons of the Nazi period
- Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes, and Audi, and feel taught when in Germany.
