Are you (or someone else) editing for: 1) best photographs 2) best documents of a particular place and time 3) best documents of mothers 4) best documents of family life 5) best photographs for a book about what? or ? As we all know almost everything about the art and craft of photography ultimately depends on subjective decisions. Each editor will approach the job with subjective biases: aesthetic biases social biases political biases photographic biases marketing biases and more biases Like any other work; experience matters. I have no doubt that Maggie Steber has a very experienced eye for photo editing. Yet, one may ask, editing for what purpose? Market segment? Publications? Fine Art books? Other? Will her edit express what you want to express about the subject(s)? about your self? about your work? other issues?
