Although we are more of a living history museum there is a substantial decorative arts part to our collection. There have been situations where we were asked not to use supplemental lighting on historic textiles. In other cases with textiles of the same vintage, lighting hasn't been a problem. I think in the latter case the curator had a better understanding that light, for the brief periods that we would be using it, would not have caused any damage. They do have systems in place so that the light is dimmed when people are not in the exhibition space in textile exhibits. We are generally a very photo-friendly place.
