The US National Portrait Gallery encourages photography except of copyrighted exhibits. Other museums also permit photography provided you don't use a tripod. Here is a picture of me is a touristy moment in the Norwegian National Art Museum. It was snapped by my wife about ten years ago with a first generation P&S Leica.
