The Maginot line, which did not extend to the channel coast, was taken by the Germans primarily from the rear after Germany invaded France through the Belgain Ardennes Forest. Fortified emplacements like those in France and Singapore during World War II before effectly useless when outflanked. Having fixed emplacements with the guns pointing out in one direction didn't help.
