Basically what characterizes the Leica is the viewfinder/rangefinder
and the M mount. The body casting has changed in dimension and shape
from the mechanical Ms, and the shutter and controls are different. But
if Leica decides to do what it did with the M cameras and the screw
mount Leicas, it could standardize the physical shape of the cameras
and retain the M8 and M9 body making machinery for a couple of decades.
Leica could simply fit new, updated electronics as the need arises.
Indeed, if they have sense, they could design the internal electronics
to be fitted as modules, the way Maitani did with the Olympus OM
cameras. That way we could be looking at a new M camera to be
introduced every year. Let's see, the M9 was released in 2009, perhaps
the M10 in 2010, and the M11 in 2011 - and so on. It would make naming
the new cameras simple.
