Leica is not likely to abandon that yet." - - - - - Basically what characterizes the Leica is the viewfinder/rangefinder and the M mount. The body casting has changed in dimension and shape from the mechanical Ms, and the shutter and controls are different. But if Leica decides to do what it did with the M cameras and the screw mount Leicas, it could standardize the physical shape of the cameras and retain the M8 and M9 body making machinery for a couple of decades. Leica could simply fit new, updated electronics as the need arises. Indeed, if they have sense, they could design the internal electronics to be fitted as modules, the way Maitani did with the Olympus OM cameras. That way we could be looking at a new M camera to be introduced every year. Let's see, the M9 was released in 2009, perhaps the M10 in 2010, and the M11 in 2011 - and so on. It would make naming the new cameras simple. Larry Z
