And I moved considerably left of my father's center-right Democrat slant. He'd proudly fought in the "good" war; and strong unions provided him with quite a fine standard of living; including complete health care and significant retirement benefits. The 60's and 70's were very difficult for my father and I politically and therefore personally. It took decades for him to understand where and why I went politically. He had to watch: the civil rights struggle and riots in the streets; the anti-vietnam war protests and Kent State shootings; the unions weaken and disappear; and the Bush years; before he eventually asked me to accept his apology for "our bad years."
