My father moved right of his father's Eastern European democratic
socialist bent.
And I moved considerably left of my father's center-right Democrat
slant.
He'd proudly fought in the "good" war; and strong unions provided him
with quite a fine standard of living;
including complete health care and significant retirement benefits.

The 60's and 70's were very difficult for my father and I politically
and therefore personally.
It took decades for him to understand where and why I went politically.

He had to watch:
the civil rights struggle and riots in the streets;
the anti-vietnam war protests and Kent State shootings;
the unions weaken and disappear;
and the Bush years;
before he eventually asked me
to accept his apology for "our bad years."
