This marks the first time the traditional prayer has been brought to New York, which has one of the largest populations of Taiwanese and Fujianese immigrants in the United States. The goddess Mazu is a popularly worshipped figure in both Taiwan and Fujian province, where people believe that she protects fishing boats that go across the Taiwan strait. The celebration also included classical dance, Fuzhou-style opera, and popular lantern games. One of the most important holidays in Chinese tradition, Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. This year the Mid-Autumn Festival falls on Oct. 6. " http://news.newamericamedia.org/news/view_article.html?article_id=b402fbf017 dca28939235a87a2f002fd Mark William Rabiner
