I've done exactly this for years! Any time I have my camera in my
hands and am not actually taking photos, I practice guessing at the
focus and then bringing the camera to my eye to see how close I've
gotten. It's a kind of nervous habit or time-passing game I play but
I guess it can't help but improve focusing time.
