Because they are not color LEDs. LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. A liquid crystal lets light through, or not, depending on how you apply electricity to it. But there has to be light to get through. That light, called "backlight", can come from a variety of sources. The new Apple laptops use white LEDs to generate the backlight. Earlier models used white fluorescent lights for the same purpose. (Never mind that there is no such thing as a white LED. For the purposes of this discussion we can pretend that there is.)
