I agree.... correct solution.... make the short cable the one you replace
the most often.....

As I mentioned, just get a short USB connector and plug and unplug from
there.  No wear or tear on the connector in the case.  I have several
external HD's and keep all except one unplugged from the PC and AC until
needed...and a couple in storage until needed.
