I think the world of publishing has changed so much in the last few 
years, that to consider self-published books as vanity press books is 
not correct any more.  More and more previously published authors and 
photographers are going the self-published route because you can get 
now get quality books with minimum hassle and no percentages to 
publishers.  You do have to market the books yourself, but the 
internet makes that possible now.  I don't have any books, 
self-published or otherwise, so I have no dog in this fight; but I 
can certainly tell from stock sales how the publishing industry has 
changed recently!!
