In many respects, the Free Speech Movement's formation marked the transition of the counter-culture from its Beatnik, Maynard G. Krebs, days to the ascent of the Hippies. One of the founers was the late Mario Savio, who suggested, "never trust anyone over 30", which was to become one of the grand slogans of the counter-culture. In 1980, on my 30th birthday, I walked into my first class and advised my fellow students that no one should ever again trust me. Blank stares resulted. I then asked, "Mario Savio?" More blank stares. "The Berkeley Free Speech Movement?" Yet more blank stares. "Never trust anyone over 30?" Absolute lack of comprehension. Now, THAT day, I felt old. The same thing happened the day Bill Haley died. No one had ever heard of him, or his Comets, or "Rock Around the Clock" or THE BLACKBOARD JUNGLE. I had missed it, but Mario Savio died from heart problems in 1996. I spoke with him, VERY briefly, in 1967. Marc msmall at aya.yale.edu Cha robh b?s fir gun ghr?s fir!
