If you have James Lager's Book Vol III you may find >more info. (I don't). You, sir, are absolutely correct and for some reason I'd never thought to check out the book. III Lager 86 discusses these numbers. The number on the camera side of the adapter is a job number, a sequential run starting low (1?) and eventually running to five digits before the practice was stopped in the late 1950's. This seems to have been an ELNY practice and not one used elsewhere by Ernst Leitz Wetzlar or its agencies. At least, I've never heard of such engravings on non-US adapters. I have no earthly idea why I did not check Lager before this. Thank you! Marc msmall@aya.yale.edu Cha robh b?s fir gun ghr?s fir!
