Most X86-class computers use a memory controller called a Northbridge. The
server computer that hosts the LUG Gallery uses a crossbar memory
controller, invented and ruthlessly implemented by Andy Bechtolsheim, that
is way faster than the Northbridge. It positively screams. When the memory
system is faster, everything is faster. Andreas von Bechtolsheim is the
Walter Mandler of the computer world. I shared an office with him at
Stanford for a year, and he is also a very very nice person.
