My fixation probably comes from growing up with: Ansel Adams books, 8x10 view cameras; and in a commercial studio where each set up was exposed with brackets of one on, 1/3 stop over, and 1/3 stop under; and the highlights and shadows were metered until the precise relative values were achieved. Yes. It can get in the way of "soul." Many find Ansel's work "cold" I find his technical mastery the "soul" of his work; when seen in original print form.
