In short, the story is true - I was a teenager and I had a Foca at the time ( French version of "the poor's Leica " ). I was secretly lent that M by a friend whose uncle was a professional reporter. HCB was then, along Lucien CLergue and H Newton, one of my idols ;-) I've lost the negs, only this 18x24 cm remains. I subsequently went the reflex route; you know the rest.
