Yes, going down was much harder than coming back up.  We took the 
steeper, shorter route down and the longer, more gradual route 
up.  My knees did fine but I couldn't have made it without my Leki 
hiking sticks.  I didn't expect as many steps.  The park service does 
a great job keeping the trials in good condition but they have added 
lots and lots and lots of steps!  With my knees, I would rather go up 
or down a slope than steps.  The steps are also very irregular so you 
can't get into a rhythm of stepping up and down a certain number of 
steps.  I also love my ancient Birkenstock hiking boots but I did end 
up losing the toenails on two toes.
