So I had to download the latest version of the Epson software, and it kicks ass! The quality seems better than before, and it is much more user friendly. The best bit: after placing the two film strips in the film holder (i.e. 8 images, half of a roll of 120 shot with 6x4.5), the preview screen automatically showed all 8 images in the correct sequence. I could adjust the cropping and the exposure for each image, and then let it rip while doing something else. The other change I made was to use the maximum optical resolution of the scanner, 6400 ppi. Before, being constrained by my desktop PC and its 2 GB of RAM, I used to scan at 3200 to keep the file size down. But no more. Even though the images are mainly destined for the web, the improvement is clearly visible when I work on the images in Photoshop. I used to be a big fan of Vuescan, but this new Epson software means that I will not need to install Vuescan on my iMac.
