Tina,

Knee braces and hiking poles are a really good idea for going downhill  
if you don' thave them already. My knees are original but one of them  
gets unhappy on long downhills. When hiking in real mountains  
(Rockies, Alps), I always use the poles and a V brace for my weak knee  
to keep the kneecap in place. The poles reduces the pounding on my  
knees.
