which I saw in a local shop for ?299 yesterday, except that it had a  
FW as well as USB interface.

Nathan, this is what I have opted for: I now have a growing wall of black WD 
bricks piling up on the back of the table. They seem to work well, but I 
don't know how to check that the second drive is working
