[Author Prev] [Author Next] [Thread Prev] [Thread Next] [Author Index] [Topic Index] [Home] [Search]Nathan, I'd been hoping to remain away from this fray, but since you asked about book policies here they are: To quote from the LUG 2007 Yearbook: "Images submitted [for this yearbook] could have been produced with any camera, including Leica cameras and lenses" And from "Comments from the Editor" in the 2007 yearbook: "First-time viewers of the LUG yearbook may note that not all of the images were created with Leica cameras and/or Leica lenses. There's a reason for this: almost all of us have a variety of cameras, few of which are immediately available (if even advisable) when the perfect picture-making moment strikes. Sometimes it's a Leica (or made with a Leica lens); sometimes it isn't. We're all Leica users, though not exclusively. Since we're mainly striving to create great images, I've decided to accept yearbook submissions irrespective of camera in hand." Plus, I'll add that I'm tempermentally better suited to be more of a host than a policeman--for that reason I'd rather make everyone feel comfortable about submitting images (which is no mean feat, given the surprising--and unwarranted--reticence of so many LUG photographers) that create additional hurdles for submission. Last year's effort saw a 30% increase in submissions over the inaugural yearbook, and I'm hoping that the trend will continue. According to blurb, we can produce books up to 500 pages <g>. So, if anyone of the list feels strongly that the LUG yearbook should have Leica-produced images, from lens to body, then please make sure that your image follows those guidelines. If you're using a Leica body but a unique non-Leica lens (such as the CV 12)--feel free to submit images from that combination, if you wish. If, on the other hand, you happen to own Leica equipment but are using a new Leica D700 with a Leikor lens when the perfect imaging opportunity arises, feel free to submit those images from your Leica D700. If you happen to own Leica equipment, but are at an event with a paper "Leica" camera and snap the picture of a lifetime, feel free to submit that image as well. Honestly, my eye is not keen enough to determine if a one-meg+ .jpg came from a Leica film scan, an M8, a Leica D300, or the man in the moon.* My only request is that when you submit your images in December, 2008, submit up to two images, of at least one meg each, with a brief caption listing your name (as you want it to appear in the book) the title of the images, and a list of any equipment used. And, as I've said many times on the LUG, let a thousand Blurb books bloom. I'm particularly pleased that so many LUGgers have committed images to their own books. Best, Jim Shulman Bryn Mawr, PA *The late, lamented Sal DiMarco one shared a story to this end: during his days at the Philadelphia Bulletin (1970s), the photo editor claimed that she could always tell a Sal DiMarco image (he used Leica glass and cameras virtually exclusively) by its technical appearance. The other photographers said that was so much animal waste, so Sal set up a contest: he created a pile of 100 8x10 news photo prints, about 1/3 of which were from his equipment and the balance from other photographers' lenses and cameras. The photo editor picked all but one of Sal's images out of the pile! She said that there was a certain "look" to Sal's images. -----Original Message----- From: lug-bounces+jshul=comcast.net@leica-users.org [mailto:lug-bounces+jshul=comcast.net@leica-users.org] On Behalf Of Natan Wajsman Sent: Friday, July 04, 2008 1:47 AM To: Leica Users Group Subject: Re: [Leica] Additional Leica photography Blurb book I enjoy all the images posted here regardless of equipment. I thought that we already had a rule that for the yearbooks we use Leica equipment (meaning either body or lens). Certainly all the entries I have submitted, even after switching to DSLR bodies, have been taken with Leica lenses, either real ones with adapter, or the PanaLeica on my Olympus. I believe that is the rule we agreed, although of course it has be on an honour system since it is impossible for Jim to police the rule. Jim, can you correct me if I am wrong?
