BTW early English-speaking europeans crossing the pond to north america often gave familiar names to the unfamiliar but similar-appearing north american birds resulting in confusion centuries later. For example the American Robin is more closely related to the european Blackbird than to the european Robin and the north american blackbirds are in a different family altogether. However with the Goldfinches the early pond-hoppers got it right: the european Goldfinch and the American Goldfinch are in the same genus Carduelis and so they are more closely related than the european Robin is to the American Robin or the Blackbird is to the american blackbirds. Here's my Carduelis contribution, the Lesser Goldfinch (Carduelis psaltria): http://www.wildlightphoto.com/birds/fringillidae/lego01/lego01.jpg Doug Herr Birdman of Sacramento http://www.wildlightphoto.com
