New York Magazine had an article on "Hotels Under $200", and at the top of the list was... the Hyatt in Jersey City, a five-minute ride from the WTC train stop. http://jerseycity.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/index.jsp http://gridskipper.com/travel/new-york/top-picks-new-yorks-hotels-under-200-279703.php?mail2=true Actually, when you check rack rates on the Hyatt site, they seem unacceptably high; but people routinely get rates below $200 via Priceline. And that's the fancy Hyatt. There are other, cheaper hotels in the neighborhood -- although not with the Hyatt's view of Manhattan. Which you can't get frim *in* Manhattan. Just saying. Which isn't to say a visit someplace else wouldn't be fun, but New York needn't be crushingly expensive.
