I have a small collection of prints with exactly that described problem. Do you also find that you have to reset the platen setting every time you start the printer? This doesn't make sense to me, I wonder if I am missing something in the instructions. After reading this: http://www.outbackphoto.com/printinginsights/pi045/essay.html (the section titled "12/19/2006 Paper Transport Issue") I have set my Platen Gap to "Wider" and just leave it there. Just now as an experiment I set the Platen Gap to "Auto" and tried printing from a stack of Silver Rag, and it failed by smearing the last 1cm of the paper. Restoring the Platen Gap to "Wider" it reverted to the behavior that I usually see, of just working. I've been tempted to go flatten some of the Silver Rag in my dry mount press, but I haven't.
