Folks -

In fact, it was a few occurrences of this phenomenon that caused me
to join the LUG in the '90's looking for an answer.

The one I'm sticking with is that yes, M's will sometimes show a
bright flare on a frame when lenses are swapped in bright sunlight.
(In fact, I believe I saw mention of a warning about this in one of
the M factory owners' manuals once.)
I was also told that the 6's are less susceptible; indeed, I believe
that I've only seen it happen on my M2, and my M6 does have some
baffling that my M2 doesn't.

On the other hand, the search for the answer to this also led me to
seek out an old college friend, a venerable photoscientist and
longtime Leica guy who I hadn't spoken with for well over a decade.
We've been in touch weekly ever since.
