Steve -  If you are exposing for the shadows and your scene has lots 
of contrast, that would be true.  It's not true for all exposures, 
though.  What I routinely did with film M's and with the digital M8 
is to find an area that is about zone 5 - usually the floor or grass 
- and meter off of that.  For me, that works most of the time.
