Currents normally run at about 4-knots and can get as high as seven. Underwater rock piles with boulders the size of VW Beetles define the channel at critical places. The current tends to suck you towards them. Small sailboats can barely manage the channel; larger ones push through at whatever speed their auxiliaries can produce. Power boats blast through at whatever speed they think they can get away with. Mix in the New Bedford Fast Ferries, fishing boats, and the occasional kayaker, and things can get exciting. Watching the action from the porch of our club is our great summer sport, on par with watching auto racing for the crashes. The last six pictures on this page will give you the idea. http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/rtaylor/PICKS/SAILING/?g2_page=3 http://tinyurl.com/34grhu "DSC" pix taken using a D40x with 55-200mm Nikkor zoom.
