Ric There is hardly a bother in any of this, and we are all glad to help. I have answered in some detail to Hoppy. The method I suggested for the M3 would work with your M4, as this also is free of an internal meter. If you are using a hand-held meter, you can, while the filter is off the camera, put the index mark you noted when you selected the effect desired at the top and meter through the polarizing filter. That should work with most filters. If not, you will have to reduce your shutter speed or open your aperture to compensate for the polarizer's filter factor. With the M6 and M7, you remove the filter from the camera lens, find the effect desired, note the index number, put the filter back on the lens, set the index number to the one noted, reinstall the lens hood, and then use the inbuilt metering system to establish the proper shutter speed and aperture.
