Auto-anything in PS will give you indifferent results. In your photo it looks like the detail has been lost in the heron's head and neck due to clipping; this is very typical of auto-anything in PS. Starting with the RAW file (you are shooting RAW files?) set the black point, white point and contrast manually. There are a number of ways to do this but the most precise is to use Curves.
