Richard Richard, these were both made with the 560mm f/6.8 Telyt. Figuring in the DMR's 1.37 crop factor the angle of view is like an 800mm lens on a full-frame 35mm camera. The flicker is a grab shot with a significant crop, and the bluebird likewise is cropped (from horizontal) and the birds allowed me close enough only after I spent a couple of hours following them around demonstrating how much of a threat I am. Many species can be photographed with a 400mm lens; it often depends on the individual bird and on the photographer's behavior. This photo was made with a 250mm lens with minimal cropping: http://www.wildlightphoto.com/birds/turdidae/mobl00.html I'm not counting on getting this close again.
